Who Will Buy A 3G iPhone?
Wednesday, June 18th, 2008
Last year the launch of the iphone was revolutionary. Everyone knew about it. When Steve Jobs gave his keynote in San Francisco at WWDC I went to the Prince Street Apple store in SoHo, New York to get opinions from people shopping.
Chris Pirillo is getting one for the GPS. Maybe it isn’t necessary for everyone, but it’s going to be really cool to see the apps developed for GPS on the 3G iphone. I can’t wait. It’s so exciting!!
Many prefer the titanium look of the first gen model and don’t like the plastic look of the 3G iphone. I like the feminine look of the white 16GB model for $299. It’s got that classic Apple feel. Ahhh…. My iphone is one of my best friends.
I want an upgrade, but I’m not 100% sure if I will be waiting in line July 11th. Should I get the white 16GB 3G iphone? Will people with first generation iphones upgrade to 3G? Is it just a trend? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

first!
I will be buying the 3G iphone when it comes out. Can hardly wait for it….
Oh yes! What kind?
Not really fair Sarah.. I had to warch the video before I could comment.. lol.. ofcourse you’re first.
I’ll get it for the G3 over the GPS,plus it’s cheaper and I can always sell the old one on ebay.
I’m going for the 3G 16mb iphone.
Tech for tech sake… consumerism. People are catching on to the deal. Are there features that will make this invaluable to the user that make this a must have? GPS, well that’s the hook, the gimmick that they left out that might get people to buy it… but is that *really* necessary? I mean, nobody’s a Lewis & Clark in NYC!
And what’s a broadcast going to look like on this 3G network.
It’s definitely a wait and see.
–DA!
Hah.. did it again,, I meant the 16GB 3G.. lol
@surfrd357 o yea I recommend not selling on ebay go to http://cellforcash.com
funtime, hahaha! black or white?
Black.. I like the look of the black more.. white with me will just get dirty looking.
Dean, what an excellent issue to bring up. I would have to say yes and no.
Yes because it’s open to developers and much faster.
No because models that will come out in the future will be much better. Once it plays flash and lifecasts that will be great.
Here is a question for you guys if you want to answer @Dean/PenPushers comment too:
Why didn’t Apple upgrade the processor?
Hi Sarah, thanks for that cellforcash site.Never knew about that one!:)
It’s the best place to sell your old phones. Forget ebay, this works 10 x better. Thanks to Chris Pirillo I know about it.
sup sup… pop… snap lulz
the new at&t data plans are such a ridiculous ripoff. avg monthly phone bill with like 200 text messages incl. service charges + taxes will exceed $100.
also, concerning selling the old iphone, why sell it on cellforcash for $100 when you can sell it on ebay for $270++ unlocked???
@zomgzzzz Okay I’m feeling bad for the confusion. I’m Sarah Austin and I’m also Pop17. You can call me Pop. I love that.
@jason The new AT&T plans are not good. I don’t like having to go through the hassle to change my plan.
It would be worse if they made you change your number!
It feels like a waste of money when the best you can get is only 16GB. Ebay may have sold some iphones at that price, but I think you are wrong on expecting that much on ebay.
The end of your video summarized how I feel about it…should I go for it or wait for the Blackberry Bold? I’m not sure, but I think that I would like to see/use them both before selecting. :)
Sarah,
I will be getting the new iPhone 3G mainly for the increased internet speed of 3G. I’m sure I’m going to like the GPS, too, but that remains to be seen.
I probably won’t stand on line for the launch but I will still pick up the phone that weekend, probably Sunday, July 13th.
Tommy
@Milos, the Blackberry Bold will be sweet!
@Tommy, I’m thinking the same thing. I hear the GPS isn’t great, but we will wait and see. Once again, the apps developers come up with for the GPS will be amazing!
Sarah - don’t you know why you were met by morose unfriendly NYers in the first part of the Video? As an x-NYer I’d balk at a pretty girl (yeah that’s you) asking me about iphone figuring you had a friend waiting who would rip me off if I said I had one. Just paranoid I guess.
I won’t be buying the iPhone 3G because it does have video. That was the crucial feature addition I was looking for. GPS and 3G are nice, but they’re not worth the upgrade from my first generation iPhone.
I’m hoping kyte.tv and qik.com and flixwagon.com all get their video apps up and running soon, and I can start streaming from my phone.
the 3G iphone is over-rated and yes, it is a trend. Don’t you agree?
Cool video Sarah! I’m planning on getting the 16gb in White. the white ones remind me of the iPods. Plus it’ll match my Macbook. ;-)
@iKelly I went from EVDO (also 3G) on a Treo 700p to the iPhone and ATT’s EDGE. It was like going from high speed cable or DSL to dial up. 3G is way better than EDGE and not over-rated at all, in my opinion.
@tommylane, 3G is only good for people who live in cities. If you are not in a populated area you probably won’t find a 3G signal.
@iKelly, Well, I live in NYC, so I 3G works for me, but you’re right, if you don’t have 3G coverage, its not worth getting.
i dont have an iphone. Can i have yours?
There’s still something weird about the iPhone for me. It feels like a Swiss Army Knife, in that the average consumer is never going to use half the stuff included. If it’s the superior phone out there, then that’s fantastic and sign me up. But AT&T will probably make you pay through the nose for the extra features, and I’m not sure if even a better network and reception is worth that.
And is it just me, or did anyone else think of Star Trek IV watching Sarah outside the Apple Store? “Looking for Nuclear Wessels? Wessels?”
Hahaha J. Rabbitte! Star Trek ftw! Are you a treky?
Oh my, yes! I’ll even catch myself watching “Enterprise” on SciFi when I should be working, which is not only counterproductive but also totally embarrassing. Whatever, I’m proud of my nerddom!
I dedicate this song to you:
Will be in today’s live show at 3pm ET
@milos just buy one?
Definitely snatching one up. I’m glad I passed on the 1st gen, $400~$500 is too much for my budget. At $199/$299, it’s a steal. I’ll probably pick up the black 16GB. I like the idea of having a choice in colors, but personally, black just looks sleeker. I had to call in a favor, but I’ve got a friend hooking me up at 4PM when they close down the stores prior to the 6PM launch ;-)
What? :0 you have the hook up? Share with me! :)
I’d love to…but I’m betting Indiana is a bit too far for a quick jaunt…?? ;-)
As for the 3G and A-GPS (Assisted GPS): 3G will be great…for the extremely small amount of time that I’ll use it. Besides, 3G cuts your talk-time in half almost.
A-GPS…yeah, it’s not as fast as the demos make it look. I’m not sure any cellphones have *true* GPS. A-GPS simply uses cell towers to get within a block of where you are, and A-GPS kicks in to knock that down to within 15 feet. Please keep in my, the GPS functionality is primarily to help route you to your local Starbucks/etc…not necessarily save your life when you are stranded out in the middle of nowhere (where you probably don’t have any signal…so it won’t even work then).
Oh. I think I’m in SF at that time… In regards to the GPS- does this mean I will have to bring a back up phone with EDGE?
Bummer, I’d be happy to hook up a fellow techie. Nah, the A-GPS will triangulate based on cell towers initially…so as long as you have a signal, it will be fine. However, if you don’t have any signal, it won’t be able to triangulate…hence, GPS would then be useless. This is the main difference between GPS and A-GPS. GPS is based solely off of satellite communication and triangulation. Whereas A-GPS requires a cell signal to function at all. For more info, here’s a good Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
Sarah, I like my N95, but might get an iPhone as well.
WOW you are so cool!
I want the new iPhone for sure. But I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to unlock it to wotk with T-Mobile like the current model. And with everyone saying that in order to get it at the $199 price tag you have to sign a contract, I might not get one after all. Only time will tell.
