The Wii Fit Girl

I covered this topic before on the weekly live show about one month ago but had no idea that it would grow to be one of the biggest memes this summer. As you can see, the video in question features a young woman, Lauren Bernat, and her boyfriend, Giovanni, and has reached millions of views in just one month, gaining national news coverage and landing Lauren on the popular MTV show, TRL. They are trying to figure out how to make money off of this, but so far have not been able to land a major deal. I will be keeping my eye on what’s next for this young couple.

Good for her. Whether she knew or not, I think it’s neat that someone can become Internet famous, from one clip.

  2. sarah July 16th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

And what a clip it was!

  3. Neha July 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

This is hilarious…maybe she should have worn pants while shaking her ass on the Wii Fit?

  4. moto62 July 16th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

neha~if she had on pants she wouldn’t be famous!
maybe she can be a spokeswoman for Hanes!
Look Who We’ve Got Our Hanes On Now!

@Neha I think that is what she thought, but then again maybe not ;)

My prediction: she’s going to get a deal to make a workout DVD!

  8. sarah July 16th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Oh man, a workout DVD?! Classic.

    nooo

That’s nothing. that epitomizes the 15-min. of fame thing

it’s nothing but softcore porn, and the currently hot Wii videogame system.

    …it’s nothing.

    15 min of fame’s evanescent.

I really like this show! I think it was just a scam.

  12. sarah July 18th, 2008 at 12:41 am

So I am being criticized across the web for this video. They think it’s too sexy. My point here is that sexy videos like this won’t do anything positive for one’s career… hence her 15 min of fame is up which is the conclusion of my video. Is there something I’m missing or not clear about?

  13. Celebitrix July 18th, 2008 at 3:46 am

Well, ….I’m pretty sure her Dad was a baker, because she does have a nice set of buns.

  14. Bill Cammack July 18th, 2008 at 9:55 am

    Good report, Sarah. :)

Obviously, videos of chicks’ asses are going to get views. That’s what the entire porno industry is based on.

This particular video went viral because it seems to be “an inside job”. People are going to pass it around and go “Dude! This guy taped his girl, and she didn’t even know! :D “.

There’s nothing wrong with them getting their fame, and “good work” to them, but it’s completely unsustainable. They can’t create any more “I taped my girl without knowing it” videos, and unless she has an actual personality, she’s not going to be able to get over based on her body.

It’s a great advertisement for wii fit, anyway. They would have been PLASTERED if they had put some chick’s ass on television to advertise their product, so everybody won here.

Has anyone actually confirmed that Nintendo wasn’t involved in this?

  16. Lawrence July 18th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

@jon - who cares, I mean suppose they are…or not, what diff. does it make?

and besides, on the video it says Nintendo denied any involvement

  17. FTW Bears July 18th, 2008 at 11:09 pm

In regards to your question in your video comment, that has never happened to me.

@billcammack, Do you think her approach not having known she was being filmed sparked something in others to want to watch? I am surprised this factror drives people to want to watch.

  18. Bill Cammack July 19th, 2008 at 7:09 am

@FTW: I think the main factor was that it was a video of a partially-undressed female. Are there any other Wii Fit videos with millions of hits?

I think that the fact that they’re purporting that she didn’t know she was being filmed falls into another genre. There’s a feeling of “getting over” because you weren’t supposed to see this video in the first place.

There’s also the feeling of wondering if the guy was going to “get in trouble” when his girl found out what he did “behind her back”, literally.

Having said that, the main factor was the girlfriend, IMO. Do the exact same video of an out-of-shape gal, fully clothed, playing the exact same section of the game, and nobody would have seen the clip at all.

  19. Jon Kepler July 21st, 2008 at 12:34 am

@Lawrence, I know what you mean - who cares? However, if Nintendo denied any involvement, and then later turned out to be involved, I’d have a fair bit of respect for their covert ad campaign.

I’ve had photos posted of me online without my permission but I don’t mind …that’s actually me dancing as the Wii Fit girl, ..I had a sex change.

It would be great if they actually made the wii fit board height adjustable.
