What really resonated for me was when Rex pointed out how he can’t spell Fimoculous while intoxicated. I’m finding the same problem with my sites, because I tend to be clever rather than clear. Perhaps we all need to think about that in a medium where it appears that most of the participants have short attention spans and terrible spelling?

I also wonder how Rex’s idea of the “biggest” internet person intersects with the Kevin Kelly idea of “1000 True Fans.” You can go through Jonathan Coulton, or Gabe & Tycho, or Yahtzee Croshaw, who are all internet-famous, and realize that there’s still a large percentage of the tech-savvy, let alone the world at large, who have no idea who any of these celebrities are. We’re a long way from the idea of the totally permeating celebrity, like a Tom Hanks, but who can say what the best way to quantify that new fame?

    Hey J.,

I wrote a little bit about the origin of the article here:

Yeah, Kevin Kelly’s piece was a direct influence.

He missed “Early on” by 20 years! geez.

OMG how can he think 1999 was early on!???! Where’s he been? File this one under Internet-Ignorant.

Hey Chris, you’re right… that was supposed to mean “BLOGGING very early on,” not online very early on.

Well 1999 is early on in my book. Heck, I started blogging last year.

But I realize he means blogging too. Either way.
