Mahalo Vlog Idol

Mahalo Daily is on the search for new talent. The original host Veronica Belmont recently left for other opportunities so the CEO Jason Calacanis created an American Idol-like contest.

Calacanis has enlisted other judges to help such as, Alex Albrecht, who co-hosts Diggnation. The videos can be found on the Mahalo YouTube account. I’ll be keeping my eye on the outcome of Mahalo Vlog Idol.

I find the audition series on Mahalo to a tasteless degrading exhibition of meat marketing. I thought Veronica Belmont was classy and hip and I’m glad she left these clowns in the dust.

    Hi Keith,

Were you a fan of Mahalo Daily to begin with?

I agree. Veronica is a classy lady!

Thanks for more insight into Mahalo Idol, I agree it has lost a lot of steam. I think Jason should just hire you.

Thanks for covering it! You might want to note that the traffic is about 40k views a show between all our distribution partners (youtube, break, blip.tv, etc).

Quick fact check: The folks trying out are getting great exposure and they all knew we were live streaming it… so nothing to worry about there.

Also, not too worried about them taking other jobs. If that happens I would be happy for them. In fact, someone from one of the major agencies told me they want to work with the final group who don’t make it.

The next couple of shows we parody the Bachelor… those are going are going to be great.

    thanks again for covering it!

    best jason

Why deos everyone hate Jason? I find that hes being hated everywhere. Specially techcrunch.

I think Sarah works and/or dates Andrew Barron. Andrew and I have a long standing beef because Andrew is good friends with Dave Winer, who doesn’t get along with me any more. Also, after Amanda left Andrew’s Rocketboom I offered her a gig at AOL Video and that sort of pissed off Andrew.

So, clearly Andrew is using his girlfriend’s show to try to take a jab at me. It’s all good… they got the URLs correct. :-)

Hey Jason, I appreciated your first comment, but the second comment… not so much. This is MY show and I call the shots around here.

  10. jason May 7th, 2008 at 12:17 am

Oh, folks told me you and Andrew were a couple and that he produced this show. is that not true?

  11. sarah May 7th, 2008 at 12:25 am

Like I said, it’s my show and I decide what to do.

Jason, you may want to double check your count across all the sites. It looks like you are only getting on average about 20-25% of the number you are suggesting.

Say, Keith. Have you ever been to any other auditions? These were actually quite fair and reasonable compared to the usual “meat market” for Hollywood.

Sarah, I’m a semi-viewer of Pop17. From the looks of things, don’t you think you could work with the guys at Valleywag? I mean, there’s a fit right there if you’d ask me! :)

@kevin, while this report was fun, I’m interested in integrity and think this report on Mahalo daily was rather tame and almost positive. Take a look at Jason’s first comment and you see even he agreed.

    @Jason,

well its no secret Andrew and Sarah are dating but that doesnt mean that he is using Sarah to conjur up past grudges. Sarah is awesome either way. Her personality is what makes this show succesful. POP17 FOREVER!

  17. Techman May 7th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Hay Jason, You are an absolute ASS WHIPE!!!
Uh…, getting a little personal wouldn’t you say?

  18. Stoppay May 7th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

It’s kinda dry… needs explosions, lolcats and people getting hit in the nuts…

    Hey Sarah Meyers-

I see some of the comments are from “sarah” and some are from “Sarah Meyers”. I see a bunch from “jason”.

Can’t tell if these are a bunch of impostors, or if “sarah”=you and “jason”=Calacanis. As I read it, the above sure looks like it could be a staged volley by a faker or two.

I have my opinions why some people dislike Calacanis. Some of it comes from the hubris demonstrated when founding Mahalo and supposedly trying to buy off Digg users. A lot of the hatred seems to come from a few people that others look up to (like the Kevin Rose “Garden” of followers). And I’m sure some is jealousy about a guy who “made it”, despite his personality.

    But what do I know.

I really don’t think it’s important who’s dating whom. Geez, what are we in high school here? Rumors about who’s dating whom really reflect poorly on the people who make the comments, and tend to expose the commenter’s not-ready-for-prime-time amateur status.

As always, your shows are first class, Sarah. Don’t let the cyber-morons get you down.

Hey Chris, So when I am logged in I publish as Sarah and when I am logged out I publish as Sarah Meyers because once you take a screen name others can’t have the same screen name. Sorry about the confusion. I checked ‘Jason’ and it is Jason Calacanis. So while I cannot disagree to people potentially posting comments with different names when I do not know it is happening. I can only tell the IP addresses are different.

Thanks for your comments! xo Sarah
