AVGN has two factors working towards his microfame popularity. The first is that he is as immersed in his subject as anyone could possibly be. He’s a reflection of a group in their mid-twenties who are very active on the internet, those of us who got an NES for Christmas in the late eighties and never put down the controller. He’s well-versed, and it allows for a depth of field that puts his competitors to shame.

The second is really his regular-guyness. He’s not something we see through internet series very often, because for all the talk of an all-inclusive web, most of the prominent and microfamous seem to come from New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Rolfe plays up his beer-guzzling, working-stiff attitude that comes from a Pennsylvania upbringing. His show, deliberately low-tech and crude, is a far cry from the clean, tech-forward programs offered by most web series.

Great show as always! My compliments to the entire Pop Crew.

J Rabbitte bring up a good point that I have not seen addressed in all this internet fame talk. (anyone else read the latest Wired?)

    Geographic location.

Since I have tuned into the internet I find most happenings are on the coasts. This is normal for any culture movement I know. So is living in New York or California required for internet fame? Probably not, but it sure helps.

@daryle I thought the thing about internet fame is you can be anywhere in the world.

I think that’s supposed to be the appeal, but think about most of the major shows and personalities. Rocketboom, Smosh, LisaNova, even here at Pop17; they all center around a few major spots. Even international stars are outnumbered. One wonders why these few places make up the majority of the voices.

And Sarah, I’m ready and eager! Whenever you want me, I’ll be around.

Ok J.Rabbitte let’s start today. I’ll send you my outline to get started.
When you say that video bloggers focus on a few major spots do you mean that we focus on a narrow subject/topic?

  8. J. Rabbitte July 22nd, 2008 at 10:03 pm

    Great! Very excited about this.

And I meant “spots” as in geographical locations. I was rambling about this over at my Tumblr; most of the vloggers and personalities I could think of were coming from New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Except for AVGN and Cali Lewis, I couldn’t come up with anyone based in other cities off the top of my head. I found it strange that with all of the opportunities and visibility the internet provides we’re still finding most out of only a few locations.

Yea, I agree for the most part. I think the ones just starting out start in random locations, but once they get going they move to a city. It’s like Bo Burnham. He is moving to NYC in a couple months from a small town in MA.
