So many deals, so little time! When Anna and I find ourselves out and about and in need of a good deal, we’re mostly just out of luck. Imagine how cool it would be if you could search only deals near your exact location from your mobile phone. Anna and I just discovered we can do just that because Bing mobile deals – available at m.bing.com on iPhones and Androids. Yum yum goodies!

I’m such a braggart when it comes to deals! My favorite girlfriend to brag about what I buy with is Anna Anisin. We mostly either talk about having bought something for a discounted price or having a deal that we want to purchase together as part of a group buying deal.

Have you ever noticed how bargain shoppers always like to comment on their deals? Well, we are the epitome of this type of shopper. I always tell Anna first about my fantastic deals. She’s got such a great mind for finance I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a CFO of a major tech company someday soon.

So many deals, so little time! When Anna and I find ourselves out and about and in need of a good deal, we’re mostly just out of luck. Imagine how cool it would be if you could search only deals near your exact location from your mobile phone. Anna and I just discovered we can do just that because Bing mobile deals – available at m.bing.com on iPhones and Androids – combines location-based services with search. It pinpoints your exact location to serve you up deals from Groupon, LivingSocial, Tippr and more near where you live, work, where you attend conferences, lunches and dinner spots with your friends. Search Deals! And you can team up with your friends to buy dinners, day spa deals, mani pedi deals, etc… by searching first for deals on m.bing.com on the go! I got to make this fun little video where I’m looking for an ice cream deal and am able to get it! Yum yum goodies!

I’m more likely to purchase items when I’m out with my friends like Anna. Anna’s got a great eye for deals online and offline, and not to mention fabulous style! She’s always telling me about the best buys and how to manage my budget. What’s best is we can shop together on the go! We’ve noticed that we seem to be making WAY more purchases when we’re buying on the go! LOL!

When Anna’s not with me, I like to get a second opinion from my other friends. Every once in a while I’ll lifecast from the store where I am shopping and ask my friends to tell me what they like best. Generally, I like to shop with friends, but often times I end up alone because I’m on the go. Thank goodness I always have Bing mobile deals to turn to!

This video is made possible by Bing mobile deals. In accordance to the FTC Guidelines, I am disclosing that I am sponsored by Bing, the decision engine from Microsoft. All editorial content has been created by me and reflects my personal opinions.

Adam was a very interesting guest, who had plenty of key insight into the work Imagine1Day was doing.

The problem with a child receiving a poor education is that they miss out on future economic prosperity and developing important life skills.

That is why it is so important we support the work of Imagine1Day and similar non profits.

In the interview Adam mentions about another non profit called Pencils Of Promise.

This is the second part of my interview with her.

In this section of the interview we discussed:

“Mobilize”, a book written by Rana due for release in January.

Where her musical influences came from

Her short lived tennis career

Her introduction to playing the guitar

Rana: What’s interesting is my background has been in technology for coming on ten years now.

I have written a book called Mobilize about the history of the app store and why Apple’s disintermediation of the carriers has been so significant to the adoption of mobile platforms and specifically iPhone app downloads.

It’s something people just have no idea that I have that background.

Josh: So give us a little background to what you have done in the past

Rana: Sure, well I worked at a venture capital fund and in 2007 I got an iPhone.

I loved it. The secret is I jailbroke it right away and I started downloading all these apps and I realised this was a huge opportunity.

A partner and I actually quit the fund we worked at in DC and moved to New York and started this company. It grew very quickly.

In the beginning no-one knew what the iPhone SDK was going to be like, they didn’t know if the applications were going to be downloaded.

Very quickly they were like “We need data”, so I started getting lots of calls.

We had an advertising product too and fundamentally 500 days later, the thing about me and I am sure you can see by the fervor I approach iPad DJ’ing.

I really like startups.

I liked working at an early stage venture fund, I liked working at an early stage startup.

I have always been the person who likes the long chain ideas. Once the product gets to the point where it’s sustainable, I get very bored and I have to leave.

It’s just not fulfilling anymore.

I got to the point with my company Medialets where it just wasn’t fulfilling.

It was big you know and that’s great. I am so proud of what we did there.

But for me personally it wasn’t working and what I wanted to do was take all that breadth of knowledge I had accumulated over 500 days and create a resource for the developers.

I became very very friendly with the iPhone developers, they would call me and say “How do we market apps?”

I noticed things happening in the app store like people started lowering the prices to $0.99 because they simply didn’t know how to sell.

I thought, if there was a book that people could just read and just get it. I am not saying it will cause people to make millions of dollars in the App Store, that’s not my intention at all.

But more of just an understanding of what to you need to do and what to think about. So this time last year I was cooped up in my house writing the book and it comes out in January, so its very exciting.

Josh: So that gives everyone a background of where you have come from and what you are doing now.

I thought what would be really important for this interview is to talk about who you are. No-one has really done that, it’s all been about the iPad.

I want to look at the person behind it, where the influences have come from and what has made you who you are today.

R: The little known fact is that I started playing music when I was very young. I had a traditional music upbringing, I started with piano.

I didn’t really like practising piano. I liked the theory behind piano, but piano wasn’t really my instrument.

Then I get into stringed instruments. I started playing the violin and viola, I really quickly liked the viola. It had a lot more richer tone and it was a more soulful instrument.

Another aspect of it is that there weren’t that many people playing it, so I felt I could get more attention from my conductor. I was very inquisitive about the instrument.

I really liked it, I was first chair in the orchestra.

Where that stopped for me though is that when I was 12 or 13, I was equally good at viola and tennis.

I had to choose. So I chose tennis.

What happened was I got really into tennis. I played eight hours a day. I was really pushing myself and playing very competitively.

A few years later around 15 or 16, I had a severe injury and I had to have surgery. I was really depressed because what happened was that then and there was I realised I could never become a professional tennis player.

So my friend had a guitar and gave it to me. You’ve got six strings on a guitar, it’s kind of like a viola. You have this rich tone, you don’t have a bow but you can manually impact the way it sounds.

So I started really getting into it.

This concludes part two of my interview with Rana Sobhany.

I was determined to make this interview more about Rana and the musical influences that have shaped her life so far.

In this first part we spoke about:

How Rana got started as the iPad DJ

What Rana thinks about the development of tablet devices

Here’s a transcript of the interview:

JOSH: OK this is Josh Chandler here with Pop17. I am here with Rana Sobhany, famously known as the iPad DJ.

So everyone has been asking me questions about what you do and what being an iPad DJ is about.

So do you just want to give a basic overview about what you do now.

RANA: Sure, actually it’s really interesting Gizmodo named me the iPad DJ.

That was not necessarily what I would have gone with because really what I am doing is live music production using tablet computers.

My interest is more in the organic quality of human interfaces with computers. DJ’ing to me is an amazing artform and there are people who are just really great at that.

But really what I am doing is live production and live remixing and fundamentally what I have done with the iPad is hacked together a version of Abelton live which doesn’t exist as a native app on the iPad yet.

So I figured out another way to do it by manually cutting up loops and making my own sounds and taking samples and trying to just string together something which is a holistic experience musically which is one of the things I have an issue with being called the iPad DJ.

Josh: I was going to ask you to bring the iPad, but I thought there was no point because Robert Scoble did an amazing video with you.

RANA: Actually, I was going to say. I don’t if this has ever been revealed. Robert came over to my house about three days after I even had the idea.

I didn’t know what I was doing, I can’t even watch that video now. It’s so terrible compared to how far the technology has gone.

And when you consider six months ago, the developers who wrote the apps I was using during that video they had never seen an iPad yet because all those apps were built before the iPad was released.

So all those apps have got a lot more sophisticated, there is a lot more different types of applications out there. So maybe I feel like I am overdue for a new demo video with all the new technology.

JOSH: I have seen a lot of people on the web that there is “this and that” is quite similar about the software, especially on the demo you were using the notebook. It’s amazing what the iPad app has enabled you to do that you can already do on the notebook.

RANA: I’ve got to say, I am not advocating people stop using laptops and computers. It’s not that.

There is nothing like being on an airplane and you’ve got this little tablet and you can sit and you have this complete scratchpad and all you need is a pair of headphones.

When I sit on a six hour plane ride from New York to London having a laptop is still rather large, you have your neighbor next to you and you don’t want to elbow them.

It’s actually a little tough and you are sitting there kind of cramped, it’s not like a real instrument. Whereas I feel my iPad is more like a traditional musical instrument.

JOSH: Yeah, that’s true because it’s the touch interface of the tablet is really native to how you use an instrument.

RANA: I always call it the hybrid of the two. For instance when I bring in a new loop or a new sound, it’s the same way you see a guitarist move their hand down the fretboard you know there is a solo about to happen.

And I lovingly say when I am watching my favorite DJ’s using Sorato “Are you checking your email or are you DJ’ing?”

You lose some of that audio and visual component. That’s what I am really interested in is trying to push that and try bring back that idea of a performance.

It’s something that I just feel needs to be said, because we get really tied to the technology. You’re still giving a show right?

JOSH: When you do your live sets, what’s the experience like for you at the moment?

RANA: Well, it’s very funny. Most of the videos have been taken at a conference, that is so not a live show experience.

I did a show at the House of Blues in LA and I jumped into the audience. That’s totally different. That’s another thing that it rather interesting about it, I am part evangelist and part performer.

So that’s a little challenging, because I have to put my analytics hat on when I do these conferences and speak from a more data driven perspective.

But when I do the performances I get to be crazy and loose myself in the performance and that’s something I really like.

That’s another thing when people come and they’ve seen the video with me explaining it and then they come to a performance and they are like “This is so different” and that’s good I like that.

JOSH: That’s interesting you mention about analytics, there is a different background to what you have done in the past with many different companies. It didn’t even occur to me that you have done something different in the past

RANA: Yeah I definitely jumped in. I realised the moment I figured out what was possible here, the thing that I had in my mind could be replicated with the iPad.

I just realized I had to keep going because it’s too important, I think this is something that is going to shape the way that future technology is used for music, so if I have the platform and the technology to push the envelope then I am going to do it.

That concludes the first part of my interview with Rana Sobhany.

For my reporting duties to the Forbes Video Network, I had Adrian Grenier come in to talk about his new film. I was lucky enough to use the interview for Pop17 too. You can see the original here. It’s interesting to see how this new form of micro celebrity is taking place.

When he isn’t working on his HBO American comedy-drama television series, Entourage, he spends his time as a filmmaker. Currently, Adrian Grenier and film producer, Peter Glatzer, first started collaborating on environmental issues in 2008 when they created the show Alter Eco for Discovery’s Planet Green channel. In addition to speaking out against Prop 23, read article he’s working on developing an iPhone app for the environmentally aware tech geeks of the world.

What do you plan to talk about on Pop17?

As the Valley Girl, I plan to bring business talk to the table in a fun and approachable way. I will be covering events in the business and technology sectors.

Short Bio:

Valley Girl, Jesse Draper is a professional American actress, entertainment entrepreneur, producer, writer and Twitterer: @valleygirlshow. Hoping to inspire and educate those who live a life at the office, along with those who are intimidated by “business talk”, she created “The Valley Girl Show” to spark the entrepreneur inside of everyone. She is the answer to all of your business related inquiries and interests! A graduate of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, she is most well known for her supporting role as Jesse, the nanny, from Nickelodeon’s hit show “The Naked Brother’s Band”.

What was your first concert experience?

The very first concert I went to was the WARP tour which introduced me to the more alternative concertgoers. There was moshing and craziness! I was in high school and Blink 182 was the most memorable band there and the reason we went. I was there with a bunch of my friends. We were at Shoreline Amphitheatre on the grass right on the incline, which was a blast! If you haven’t seen a concert at Shoreline, you are seriously missing out. Shoreline is still my favorite place to see concerts. Nothing competes!

What are you working on right now?

Right now, we are about to release the new season of “The Valley Girl Show”. We have a lot of exciting things happening this season. We have MC Hammer and Le Var Burton, we have Kai Huang of Guitar Hero and more! We are also working with KRON4 and every Thursday during the evening news there will be a Valley Girl Show segment on television, so look out for it!

If you could be a piece of technology, what would you be?

This is a really fun question. If I could be a piece of technology that actually exists it would definitely be a a MacBook Pro or some sort of computer, because the way I see it, if you are a computer, then the internet is essentially…your brain, so you would be brilliant! Can you imagine???
