Lisa Kidrow hosted the 15th annual Webby Awards on Monday June 13th, 2011 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Winners were selected by the people’s choice- voted on by fans- and as voted by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Daniel Radcliffe presented Anna Wintour with the people’s voice award for vogue.com and there were special performances by Norah Jones. Winners and celebrity attendees made their way on the red carpet and the award ceremony ensued. Hailed as the “Internet’s hightest honor” by the New York Times, the awards include websites, ads, film, and apps. Dress by Teri Jon.

Dan Brown is currently the 49th most subscribed director on YouTube, with over 275,000 subscribers and over 5.4 million channel views. Brown has been noted in the media for his newly and widely viewed self-made videos. This channel is where Dan Brown posted his first videos, including his Rubik’s Cube tutorial. In August 2010, he launched “Dan 3.0″, which would be a year-long project in which users could control his life through voting on his actions. Based on these votes Dan has done many notable things the biggest of which is move to San Francisco. He has since discontinued the Dan 3.0 project, citing personal difficulties and lack of viewer interest in the new format of his videos. At the TechSet party for Internet week in NYC, I sat down with Andrea Syrtash. She’s a dating & relationship expert, on-air personality and author. 

Andrea has contributed to over a dozen relationship-advice books and is the editor of “How to Survive the Real World” and “How to Survive Your In-Laws”. Summit Series was so much fun! I am so happy I went as an open book. The last night was magical. I met Bear. This is the story of life’s music. A lot of you have been asking to create different channels so that you don’t have to watch all of these vlogs on the main channel. In response to your comments on the videos, I’ll be lifecasting from a new channel, where I’m sure you will see more of Bear, and I’ll go live and post these types of video blogs there too.

She’s got such a great mind for finance I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a CFO of a major tech company someday soon.

So many deals, so little time! When Anna and I find ourselves out and about and in need of a good deal, we’re mostly just out of luck. When Anna’s not with me, I like to get a second opinion from my other friends. Every once in a while I’ll lifecast from the store where I am shopping and ask my friends to tell me what they like best. Generally, I like to shop with friends, but often times I end up alone because I’m on the go. Thank goodness I always have Bing mobile deals to turn to!

A Zoetrope is a trick that show’s people animation through a series of still images spinning. Traditional zoetropes would use two-dimensional images, typically spun in a circle and with a person looking through the slits.

This 3D zoetrope from Pixar inspired from Studio Ghibli by Hayao Miyazaki.

Zoetropes date back to the nineteenth century. Images revolve on the inside of a barrel, and viewed through slits in its walls, imitate motion. Pixar’s 3D zoetrope takes it to the next level in stunning color.

Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3, recently Tweeted about behind the scenes of the five-time Oscar-nominated movie. He gives a tweet out to Z Corp printer. Pixar used their 3D printing technology to create models of the characters we see in the film. Warren Trezevant was gracious enough to show us around their 3D printing studio. He explains how the 3D prints are the most precise replication of the actual characters. You can’t buy a toy this real!

The Z Corp equipment creates the characters in full color. The 3D printer that made this model uses inkjets very similar to the ones in commercial printers and sprays the ink onto an off white surface that is similar to plaster.

Justin Beiber and Ozzy Ozborne collaborated on an interesting video for Sprint. On twitter everyone liked the Doritos and PepsiMax ads the most. “I love Superbowl Sunday. Or, as @KimKardashian calls it, ‘the biggest shopping day of the year,’” she tweeted around kickoff.

A couple weeks ago, a Canadian blogger posed a nude photo of pop star Miley Cyrus. Zack Taylor, the blogger, said that the photo came from her iPhone out of her stolen purse. Later last week, the blogger admitted that it is fake. Forbes has the story. Now the Cyrus crew may be suing the blogger.

What do you think of the new Facebook? I like the way it looks, but I’m having a hard time figuring it out. I don’t like how you have two clicks to post a status update whereas before it seemed to be a more central focus. And will Zuckerberg ever release features with the bloggers first? Why 60 Minutes?

I’m so excited to see Tron on December 17th. I think it may be the Avatar of 2011. I already saw the exclusive Disney premier a month ago, but they didn’t show the end. I can’t wait!

Microsoft and Verizon helped me get my hands on the Kin before launch so I could test it out and tweet about the features. This video is a review of the three pro’s and con’s to the Kin One.

Update: Microsoft Kin was discontinued after only 48 days. Whew! That didn’t take long at all. That’s about the shortest product life-cycle we can remember for this little “smart” phone. Now they are practically giving them away on clearance. Microsoft is discontinuing to use resources and build a tablet computer that will compete with Apple’s iPad. Clearly, they didn’t plan out this early discontinuation. If that had been the case, Microsoft would have launched some super high end fancy product as the end of the life-cycle of the Kin drew. That way they would lure everyone in for a clearance sale and advertise the new (already launched) product for sale.

If you love The Onion as much as I do then you will love this. Baratunde Thurston is the web editor and an all around brilliant and funny guy. Baratunde does a great job at branding his name through working on many publications at one time such as Jack and Jill politics, Future Of, his personal blog, and The Onion.

The acronym N.E.R.D. stands for “No One Ever Really Dies,” but childhood friends Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams, and Shay most certainly used the group to proudly emphasize the nerdier aspects of their musical personalities. Before this side project took shape, Hugo and Williams — as the Neptunes — had established themselves as giants in the field of pop production, whether they were working with hardcore rappers, smooth crooners, or teen pop groups. Although their faces were known to many due to this prominence, N.E.R.D. allowed the duo to take center stage, as rock stars, even if a new alias was being used.

Look forward to their newest album, launching this summer, “Nothing” for a hit track featuring Nelly Furtado.

It was a cold foggy Saturday night in San Francisco when we headed over to an auto body shop where a KIN Microsoft concert presented Asher Roth and N.E.R.D. to the makeshift stage. We had a fantastic interview with Asher Roth along with some good laughs. He is so funny, and sweet. Later in the night he rocked our socks off to his hit song “I Love College”. It was a great night! I hope everybody enjoys this interview as much as we do!!

We went to the Streamy Awards in Los Angelos because we had set up a few interviews to report on. Before arriving to the event I set up, confirmed and secured a press pass with central red carpet placement for my crew and I. There was only one press pass for me and not a press pass for my cousin, Glen Curtis. However, they were as accommodating as possible given a somewhat disorganized situation. The Streamy Awards do not hold a candle to the prestige and value of the Webby Awards. Besides Foursquare, the Webby Awards will always remain Silicon Alley’s gems. For the exclusive promo of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, MTV invited me to Los Angeles for the MTV movie awards. I went dressed as Optimus Prime and got to walk the red carpet in search of Shia Labeouf. This was one of the only events where I was invited as a special guest and not as press so I wasn’t able to get any footage on the red carpet, but you’ve probably seen that already so I thought I’d post this anyway. I know that if I had meet Shia Labeouf or Megan Fox they would have come back to New York with me on Virgin America. Well, maybe not, but the would have definitely gotten a kick out of the Transformers gear.

This week, Pop17 highlights today’s 11th anniversary of United States v. Microsoft, when MS was accused of alleged monopolistic business practices. We felt it was important to remind everyone of this landmark event as the decision paved the way for many of the applications and interfaces most of us take for granted! But they aren’t stopping there, as it looks like the EU has Google in its sights as well! While we wouldn’t necessarily call this a warm celebration of the anniversary, it certainly looks as though the EU is paying homage and showing respect in its own way! Could the EU v. Intel case be the US v. Microsoft for the next web generation??

I’ve had a few friendly feuds about what it means to be viral. Faris Yakob says, “as the viral / spreadable discussion continues, it is important to remember that how you think about something does matter, because the metaphors we use can change how we approach things.” Meme videos spread because we decide to share them with our friends. They’re “viral,” but not the “cold” kind. Or worse, like Swine flu.

Nielsen reports that Twitter is today’s fastest growing social network. The Hollywood stars of Twitter unite as they talk, @reply and update us with their most immediate thoughts. Cool. So why would successful celebrities need to talk to their friends and fans online? They don’t need to, they want to because now good PR is up to them. They can refute rumors and break news all by themselves! For example, Demi More, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Aniston, John Mayer and Britney Spears are all on twitter. They are finding ways to use their status to advertise and make money. John Mayer is actually endorsing products like Campbell’s soup on his Twitter feed. As the commercial demand shifts to digital there will be a new breed of star Twitter feeds.

Lost Zombies is a website using the power of the crowds to make a movie. Their greatest challenge is editing the endless hours of footage into one feature-length independent film. YouTube famous v-logger, Bryony aka Paperlilies, is also actively shooting a crowdsourced zombie movie with her community of v-loggers from YouTube.

Timothy Sykes‘s came on Pop17 last summer to talk about his blog, show, DVDs and reality TV show.

He’s an American investor and blogger who traded his $12,415 bar mitzvah money into $1.65 million during the first bubble. Today, Sykes profits from his blog and live stock show announcing profits of over $40,000 a month. Young Money calls Sykes a successful result of “pseudo-celebrity status.” Tim is regularly discussed in the news.

Owing thanks to their Hollywood lead man and Olympic hero statuses, not to mention the crafty support of some of the best agents in the biz, we can assume with confidence that Christian Bale and Michael Phelps will come out of their recent PR nightmares and subsequent online jokes, parodies and criticisms relatively unscathed. But for those who venture into the world of online stardom with no prior public exposure or status of any note, damage control is not so easy. We will undoubtedly see Bale star in another major motion picture and Phelps attempt to shatter yet another record, but will we see another video from Jenni cam? While traditional celebrities have the means and popular command to move on from their mistakes and reshape their image, without similar means, one mistake by or a lack of interest in a micro-celeb can mean an end to their micro-stardom.

Previously on Pop17, we took a look at Jennifer Ringley’s downward spiral and withdrawal from the spotlight. Ringley appears to have gone the ways of Joe of the Plumber and Emmalina, two persona’s who fell from micro-fame as fast as they ascended.

Girls In Tech is bringing women together from around the world. So we went to give a toast at the launch party in New York City.

I put together some outtakes from recording the show because on several occasions, while editing in Final Cut Pro, I’m known to LOL because of something I said while recording. Although there isn’t anything too insane with the bloopers, like me falling out of the chair, I like the part at 1:15 where I *quickly* run through the takes while counting with my hand- indicating for editing of the video. :)

Previously on Pop17, I talked about lifecasting and interviewed Steve Chen about YouTube’s plan to integrate live video on their site. Silicon Alley Insider said that it wouldn’t happen this year, however, it did with YouTube Live. As you can imagine, that was expensive to serve. (See more details at TechCrunch).

Part of the event was broadcasted to YouTube from 30,000 feet in the air on board Virgin America for their wifi beta launch.

I agree with Cory Williams when he says, the best part of YouTube live was getting to hang out with the community.

Bo Burnham, Dane Cook and Lily Allen’s careers benefitted from their web presence on Myspace and YouTube. They leveraged their internet success to pursue other opportunities while continuing their internet engagement. Good content and talent will make anyone stand out online. Persistence, among other things, is also key.

The Vlog Brothers are two brothers that communicate with each other through videos on YouTube. The Vlog Brothers channel took off, propelling them to internet stardom and inspiring others to follow their footsteps. Five Awesome Girls were inspired by the Vlog Brothers and brotherhood 2.0 so they started a channel and, within a significantly short time, ignited a slew of awesome collaboration channels. The first to emerge, in a large way, was Five Awesome Guys.

New York City, the home of Madison Avenue, held Advertising Week and brought together thought leaders in online advertising to share ideas. We went for The Real Time Matrix to hear people’s ideas and experiences making money online. From publishing to advertising, being creative will make you stand out from the rest.

There is no guarantee of success if you are an internet celebrity transitioning to Hollywood. We may have seen wild successes, but the uncertainty of abandoning the web in hopes of being big in Hollywood can end in a no win situation.

Today DECA, a digital entertainment company, announced that it’s investing in the YouTube sensation Smosh to make original content for the web. The deal will make them an exclusive business partner in marketing and distribution. Anthony Padilla said, “We are extremely excited about joining the DECA family. We love making videos and the feedback from our fans has been amazing. With DECA’s help we look forward to bringing Smosh to even bigger audiences.” How DECA plans to find bigger audiences for the most-subscribed YouTubers ever will be interesting to see.

DECA was founded in 2007 by experienced entertainment and Internet executives who previously held senior roles at Sony Pictures, ABC, and Yahoo! Music. DECA uniquely identifies, funds, markets and distributes web shows. Based in Santa Monica, California, the company is backed by Mayfield, General Catalyst, and Atomico.

In other development news, popular YouTube comedian and celebrity commentator Michael Buckley recently signed a deal with HBO Labs to create online video shows. Joshua Cohen of TilzyTV says Michael is “just mean enough, just funny enough, and with the right dose of you-go-girl” to make it big.

In addition, a web pilot called The Remnants which stars web celeb Ze Frank (with other stars like Justine Bateman and Ernie Hudson) is currently being considered by NBC. It has been described as “a quirky and comedic story of a group of friends who search for answers and survival, upon realizing they are some of society’s last living inhabitants in post-something Los Angeles.”

As we fall deeper into an economic recession, the studios will likely consolidate their spending and turn to the web as a cheaper way to produce and reach audiences who use content to engage end-users.

In less time than Sarah Palin has served as governor of Alaska, Ben Huh’s company has grown from a tiny blog to a network with over 100 million page views a month. The company runs I Can Has Cheezburger?, FAIL blog, EngrishFunny, and many other sites that will make you LOL. I met the co-founders, Eric Nakagawa and Kari Unebasami at ROFLCon in Cambridge, Massachusetts this year. They are releasing their LOLcat book just in time for the holiday season.
