To become part of the community is the #1 thing. You can't just dump content, you have to be part of the movement and share your content with your community, rather than spam it. Also, Sarah, I think 'be patient' is also another important thing often overlooked. It took us all a long time until things started working out. A YouTube video is one of the best ways to rank high in a Google search. I know a lady who turns $1K/mo. from 1 video she made promoting an affiliate product. YouTube's clever content creators could benefit from paying more attention to the marketing savvy.
