This year I had the honor of interviewing Ozzie Smith “The Wizard,” one of the greatest shortstops of all time. Ozzie played for the San Diego Padres from 1978-1981 and was then traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982.
Before retiring in 1996 Ozzie managed to win 13 National League Gold Glove awards and attended the All Star Game 15 times! Ozzie accumulated 2,460 hits and 580 stolen bases throughout his career and won the National League Silver Slugger Award as the best hitter as a shortstop in 1987.
On January 8, 2002 Ozzie found out that he is going to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, on the same day Ozzie served as the torchbearer for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Ozzie has always given back to his community and received the Roberto Clemente Award in 1995.
Today Ozzie is working with Depend Campaign to End Prostate Cancer, a four-month long initiative aimed at informing men about the risks of prostate cancer and the importance of early detection.
He is a great role-model for all of us. Ozzie is a living proof that hard work and determination pay off.
