If Don Draper Had A Blog: Disaster or Creative Genius?

With the launch of Mad Men Season 4, AMC’s blog briefly discusses The Fine Art of Marketing.  As a huge fan of the show and a blog owner, I’m forced to ask the question:

In today’s day and age, do the same rules apply when promoting your brand on the internet?  How would Don Draper and the Mad Men creative team advertise a blog?

  1. Seeing as how I'm the author of this post, I suppose it's only fair that I start things off:

    *Disclaimer: I'm not Don Draper : )

I think that the Mad Men team would come up with a strategy to create the "want." If there's anything I've learned from listening to Don talk about products and customers, it's the idea that people have to be told that they "need" your product. That they are missing out on something valuable, that other people know about, are enjoying, and find rewarding. People hate feeling left out. Make them feel like they are missing out by not visiting your blog on a regular basis.

They would then execute that strategy using offline marketing tools such as flyers, posters, T-shirts. Meet your potential customers where they are. Go find them. Don't make them find you. Where would your potential customers hang out in real life? A coffee shop, an organic market? Talk to them. Tell them about your site and how valuable it is. How they can benefit from visiting.

Finally, the Mad Men creative team would never stand for a site that didn't look impressive. A poor design can cause people to navigate away from your sight immediately. Make sure your site is branded to match the flyers and posters you used to get visitors there so that they know they're in the right place when they arrive.
