Internet People Fame Survey

Monday, February 25th, 2008

For the first Pop17 show I went to Washington Square Park to ask people if they knew about some people on the Internet. I took the survey at random making sure to include a variation of ages. Everyone knew what a celebrity is, but only a few were knowledgeable about this fairly popular phenomenon, online. It’s surprising how many people I surveyed knew little to nothing about anyone famous online.

The Internet enhances our communication which encourages a newfound self-awareness that forces us to recognize how we present ourselves to others. One’s personality against massive and outspoken perceptions are important to study when interacting with communities online. Google will find what others are saying about you online so be careful.

I’m interested in how these people are getting attention online and whether or not this attention translates elsewhere. In a micro-experiment to test the reach of micro-celebrity on the streets, here is what I found:

Looking at this percentage line plot graph shows who’s the most popular online personality. Perez Hilton, Tila Tequila and Chris Crocker were the most recognized personalities.

This percentage bar plot graph shows the representation of people on the street who know about web personalities and the people who don’t.

I thought I’d show an area plot graph so that you can clearly see how many people did not know about any micro web celebs. My survey shows that 31 percent of the 44 random people I interviewed on the street knew one or more micro celebrity.

When I asked one guy if he knew of any web celebrities he responded, “you are probably a web celebrity.” I asked why and he continued, “just by being on Facebook you are probably a web celebrity.”

What is the nature of this micro-fame? At the very least, the topic is entertaining, empowering and current. And so begins Pop17. More tomorrow.

I think I meant that I have to spend the time to read it in detail. I read it once but I like to read this kind of stuff again to retain it in longterm memory.

    Thanks.
