Battle of the Gamer Girls

The release of Grand Theft Auto IV has brought a lot of attention to the gaming industry and the women who dominate it. Around the world, the number of women gamers online is starting to overtake the number of men. A report by Gamesdog outlines the statistics.

Morgan Webb is a geek who built a sustainable career in gaming. She launched Webb Alert in August 2007 and interacts with her fans and audience on MySpace.

Becky “Aktrez” Young is a pro gamer who has built a big brand around her activity on social networks. She does live broadcasts with her friends on Justin.tv. She is a recurring guest on G4′s The Loop and creator of the Girls Entertainment Network.

One up and coming gamer girl to keep an eye on is Katharine Fletcher. She’s a video blogger from London who can be found on the Channel Flip Network. Fletcher’s the host of Play:Digital.

  1. Thanks for the props! I really appreciate it. Although, I wouldn’t consider myself a “pro” gamer. I actually have been gaming since I was four but never entered the pro scene.

I do, however, hope that you come by and check out the site. Something there for everyone!

Thank you again for putting me up with these other amazing “geek” women. It’s an honor.

  2. heeey that’s great to see you included Becky (Aktrez) in your coverage! Let’s not forget that she’s worked at Mythic and Acclaim in the past behind the scenes and is currently helping to make VIDEO GAMES LIVE the coolest event!

    rock on!

  3. Sarah Meyers says:

Thanks Becky! I’d say you are a professional in the gaming industry. Wouldn’t you?

    Pro gamer sounds so cool!

  4. Maybe we can invent “Sim Make-up”, teaching young girls about make-ups and let ppl exchange ideas,

then the number of female gamers will go skyrocketing, HAHA.

thx again for the report, Sarah.

Great video. Just one comment. Katharine fletcher is dressed as link FROM Zelda in that part of the video. Not like it’s a big deal just making the comment because I always made that mistake myself until I played the game for the first time.

  6. sarah says:

Hey Smick, I noticed that too after I finished the video and made a comment about that being Link and not Zelda at the bottom of the text. Thanks!!

@BrookersTV, thank you. I hope you game!

  7. jamesmccan says:

why did you leave the kitchen?

  8. sarah says:

    @jamesmccan, huh?

  9. He’s implying that women should stay in the kitchen. Typical immature male response to anything female related. I am just DYING for the day when they come up with something more … oh I don’t know. Original!?

  10. sarah says:

Becky, wow! I am surprised to see a comment like that on my site. Strange for today’s age when women think we live in a society that isn’t sexist.

  11. jtv user says:

Sarah i agree you need to get out the kitchen and go out on a date with me please.

  12. sarah myers is really cute says:

Well how about we have an auction and the winning bid gets to take Sarah out on a date? I’ll open with $100

  13. wonder how much I’ve got in my paypal account

  14. Hi Sarah – thanks for including me in the show. I hope that more coverage like this will open people’s eyes to the fact that women are into gaming too and are capable of working in the gaming industry, or providing valuable comment on gaming in the press.

  15. sarah says:

Hey Katharine, I totally agree with you!

  16. though I have other thoughts on some little details I give you props for a very well written blog. Keep up the very good work.
