SOPA and PIPA: Know How To Act Now
The bill known as known as The Protect IP Act in the Senate and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, is an Internet protection bill aka censorship legislation that many would appear to be a threatening sequel to last year’s COICA Internet censorship bill. The Stop Online Piracy Now (SOPA) is currently being supported by both houses in Congress after they had a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, November 23, 2011.
The bill would essentially establish major powers for corporations intent on corralling copyrighted materials. These new powers would lead to exorbitant legal bills for start-ups, Silicon Valley giants, and potentially individual users. That doesn’t sound so bad but let’s take a close look. Under current practice, copyright owners such as TV networks, Media conglomerates, and Hollywood studios contact hosting websites to request that pirated videos be removed.
